Bright Shadow (10.31.10)

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

Rev. Deborah Cayer

We steer our lives by the light of those great souls who’ve come before us, and we honor our loved ones even as we let our own light shine.  Why is it so important to do both these things—honor others and claim our own light?  You’re invited to bring a picture or memento of a deceased loved one for the memory table that we’ll create at the beginning of this All Souls Service.

Every day, people make a harrowing journey to the end of a section of the long, high wall that has been built in places along the US Mexican border. How did this situation become so dire?  Why is this issue critical for all people of faith? This sermon comes from the winning bid by Lonna Harkrader at last spring’s Auction.

Five Smooth Stones (10.03.10)

Sunday, October 3rd, 2010

Rev. Deborah Cayer

The UU theologian, James Luther Adams, often said that while the numbers of people on the religious left were few in numbers, liberal religion has five smooth stones, just like the ones that the boy, David, used to bring down the giant, Goliath.  Adams said religious liberals could use these essentials with confidence in a stand against totalitarianism and fundamentalism. What are the stones, and how might we use them today?

During the High Holy Days, Jews intentionally turn back to their tradition’s essentials, and in doing so find a renewed faith to live lives of hope and meaning. Covenant Groups (08.29.10)

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Rev. Deborah Cayer

We talk a lot about spiritual growth, but what is it and how can we foster it in community? Is there a kind of “spiritual practice” that encompasses our interactions with others so we can become more skillful in listening, in opening to others, and in speaking the truth with love?  Covenant Group members will share how their experiences in one particular form of community have stretched, challenged, and nurtured them in their own growth, and enriched their relationships with each other and with the broader ERUUF community.
